Pen Y Bont Surgery strives to be a centre of excellence in Medical Education and a hub for these activities within Denbighshire.
GP Registrars
Pen Y Bont is an approved practice for the training of GP Registrars. These are fully qualified medical doctors who have completed both an undergraduate medical degree and a postgraduate ‘Foundation Programme’ within a hospital setting in various specialities. Having completed this, these doctors have chosen to specialise in General Practice and are then called ‘GP Registrars’ until they complete their training.
GP Registrars are placed at the practice for around six months at a time, and we offer appointments with our Registrars just like we would a GP. We aim to offer a friendly and supportive learning environment and our GP Registrars are very much part of the Pen Y Bont team. Dr Reid and Dr Abraham are both currently trainers for GP Registrars at the practice and we are part of the Dyffryn Clwyd GP Training Scheme locally.
Medical Students
Sometimes medical students will sit in with the GP or Nurse during consultations, and occasionally the students will consult with you first before the doctor sees you. You will always be advised when they are present and asked if you are happy to see them or for them to stay. We will always respect your wishes and your decision will not affect your care in any way.
All of our GPs are Medical Student Trainers at the practice, and Dr Powell is our lead for Undergraduate Medical Education, in his role as an Honorary Clinical Lecturer at the University of Liverpool School of Medicine (Liverpool Medical School). Pen Y Bont has a long history of training medical students from Liverpool Medical School, often towards their final years of study. In addition, we are now also proud to host students from the new North Wales Medical School, based at Bangor University.
